Our Story
1992
Primary Care Services Begin ; Good Neighbor Health Clinic is formed

In 1992, two local physicians, Dr. Peter Mason and Dr. Paul Manganiello, recognized a critical need in the Upper Valley. As more local residents faced homelessness and lacked access to essential healthcare, the two felt compelled to act, offering primary care in a modest space at St. Paul’s Church near the Upper Valley Haven’s original site in White River Junction, Vermont. This grassroots initiative marked the beginning of what would become a powerful force for health equity in the region.

Dental Care Is Offered ; Red Logan Dental Clinic is Formed

By 1994, demand for care had grown significantly. Dr. Bob Keene and Dr. Red Logan joined the effort, expanding services to include dental care. In those early days, patients were treated wherever care could be provided—from the church vestry to local dental offices—where providers often volunteered extended hours to meet overwhelming needs. Care ranged from urgent procedures, including tooth extractions, to assessing patients and coordinating treatment across multiple providers, with the hope of engaging more dentists in sharing the responsibility of care. Following Dr. Logan’s passing in 1995, the dental clinic was named in his honor, recognizing his
extraordinary commitment to the community. By 1996, the Red Logan Dental Clinic was formally established as part of Good Neighbor Health Clinic, solidifying a model rooted in teamwork, volunteerism, and a shared commitment to caring for neighbors in need.2001
Moving To Our Home - Gates Memorial Library

The clinic’s next chapter of growth came in 2001, when a federal grant secured by Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords, along with generous community support, enabled Good Neighbor Health Clinic to secure a permanent home. The historic Gates Memorial Library, a neo-Gothic revival building listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was lovingly restored and transformed into a warm, welcoming health center in downtown White River Junction. Today, this beautifully restored space continues to house the Good Neighbor Health Clinic, where compassionate care is provided to more individuals each year. From its humble beginnings to its present-day impact, Good Neighbor Health Clinic remains committed to delivering free, high-quality medical and dental care to Upper Valley residents facing financial hardship.

As Dental Clinic Director, Dr. Bradley leads the next chapter of the clinic’s work! She mentors Dental Externs while leading a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to expand services, improve continuity, and strengthen the clinic’s ability to meet the growing dental needs of the Upper Valley community.

Addition of Patient Food Assistance

A donation from Hannaford at the end of 2023 opened the door to a new kind of support at Good Neighbor Health Clinic: food resources at the time of appointment. The clinic began with preparing emergency food bags to provide immediate relief to individuals facing food insecurity especially at moments when connecting to outside resources may not yet be possible. Food options have expanded to include fresh produce, provided by Willing Hands. Our staff and volunteers continue to engage patients in taking the next step of linking to food assistance resources, local food pantries, and community dinners for additional food security.

First Annual Vaccine Drive-Thru

Building on our low-barrier approach to care, the clinic hosted its first vaccine event in 2024. Designed to be as accessible as possible, the event offered both walk-up and drive-through options and welcomed people without the need for an appointment. The goal? Protect as many community members as possible in a manner that was straightforward and comfortable, especially for our community members who may avoid traditional clinical settings. Encouraged by its success, Good Neighbor Health Clinic plans to continue offering events annually to reach even more community members with essential preventive care.

Installation of Cost-Free Vending Machine

In 2025, Good Neighbor Health Clinic added another service: a cost-free vending machine providing access to resources 24/7 for community members in need. The vending machine is regularly stocked with items like Narcan, personal hygiene supplies, and other basic health items. In addition to providing items to community members, our vending machine allows us to build relationships with individuals accessing these services to engage in other opportunities for care and support, if they so choose.
