Good Neighbor Day of Giving Op-Ed

Keeping our safety net intact

Elizabeth Franson and Todd Allen, for the Valley News

Our healthcare system is in a deepening crisis.

That’s a fact that’s been acknowledged and discussed for years but is now worsened by the sweeping reforms to funding for healthcare and medical research proposed by the Trump administration. The need for societal safety nets like free and nonprofit health clinics, developed over recent decades, is skyrocketing.

The Good Neighbor Health Clinic (GNHC) and Red Logan Dental Clinic (RLDC) in White River Junction have served the Upper Valley’s neediest and most vulnerable residents since 1992. In that time, we’ve seen demand for our adult primary care and dental services steadily increase: from 2022 to 2025, our scheduled medical appointments grew by more than 60%. Now, with proposed changes to Medicaid and Medicare and the freeze on federal grants looming, our dedicated, committed staff and volunteers are being challenged as never before to meet an ever-increasing need for
our services.

As we face the specter of dwindling federal and state support, how do we keep our safety net from unraveling?

Friday, April 25, will mark GNHC’s second annual “Day of Giving,” a special fundraising event to rally support for our mission to provide vital services to those in need. It’s a day where neighbors unite to make a difference, showing solidarity and generosity towards ensuring access to quality healthcare for all. We’ve set a goal of $10,000, which will be instrumental in sustaining the essential services offered by the Good Neighbor Health Clinic and Red Logan Dental Clinic. Donations will be matched up to $5,000 from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Every dollar raised will directly contribute to providing medical and dental care to individuals and families who may otherwise go without.

We are blessed to live in a caring, giving community in the Upper Valley. GNHC and RLDC have benefitted from that generosity over the years. If you’ve been a donor to GNHC and other local organizations like us, we thank you. If you’re interested in contributing to our Day of Giving and would like to know more about us and our work, please contact us. We’ll be happy to share our successes as well as our challenges.

Red Logan Dental Clinic in White River Junction. Todd Allen is chair of the board of trustees of GNHC and RLDC.

Good Neighbor Health Clinic Gains Town Approval for Innovative 24/7 Harm Reduction Vending Machine

October 8, 2024

White River Junction, VT — In a significant advancement for community health, the Good Neighbor Health Clinic (GNHC) is proud to announce that it has received official approval from the Town of Hartford for the installation of a cutting-edge harm reduction vending machine. This new initiative, set to be installed outside the clinic’s back entrance, will provide 24/7 access to essential health supplies and harm-reduction tools.

Elizabeth R. Franson, Executive Director of GNHC, welcomed the town’s unanimous vote for formal approval with enthusiasm. “We are delighted to have secured the Town of Hartford’s official endorsement for this crucial project,” Franson said. “This approval reflects a shared commitment to enhancing community health and ensuring that essential resources are available to all residents, at any time.”

The SD5000R vending machine, an advanced model from IDS Solutions designed for outdoor use, will be stocked with a variety of vital items. These include Narcan (Naloxone), sunblock, personal hygiene products, oral health kits, and sexual health supplies. The machine will be funded through a combination of grants from Direct Relief, The Delphinium Fund, a donor advised fund at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, as well as community donations, highlighting GNHC’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

“The need for these resources in our community has become increasingly urgent,” Franson noted. “This vending machine will provide critical support to individuals who might otherwise struggle to access these essential supplies, ensuring they have the help they need around the clock, without having to wait for someone the following day.”

The SD5000R will be securely anchored and monitored by surveillance cameras to ensure safety and prevent misuse. Its transparent window will facilitate easy identification of supplies, and instructions will be provided in both English and Spanish to accommodate diverse needs. Real-time inventory management will help maintain optimal stock levels and adjust inventory as required.

“The Town of Hartford’s unanimous approval is a vital step in making this project a reality,” Franson added. “This machine will extend our services beyond regular hours, offering a reliable and discreet access point for those in need.” The vending machine’s installation aligns with GNHC’s mission to provide free, compassionate care and adapt to the evolving needs of the community. The clinic plans to assess the impact of the vending machine and share the results with the community by Autumn 2025.

“This initiative represents a major leap forward in our efforts to improve public health,” Franson concluded. “We are excited to see how it will positively impact our community and look forward to continuing our work to support and enhance the well-being of the Greater Upper Valley.” The introduction of the SD5000R vending machine marks a new chapter in GNHC’s commitment to innovation and accessibility in healthcare, providing essential resources and support to the Upper Valley community around the clock.
